Suger Mill News 2020

Old Sugar Mill once produced thousands of tons of sugar

While the Old Sugar Mill may be a destination for wine tastings, it was once a sugar beet processing plant that made granulated and bulk liquid sugar for nearly 60 years.

A monthly celebration at the Sugar Mill started today with its “Farm to Fork Uncorked!” event. Tickets for specific events — taking place each weekend — are available at the Mill itself or through it’s website.

Historically, the first record of the sugar mill was in October 1934, when it was reported that Amalgamated Sugar Company was closing the deal on the land purchase. It was later reported that 100 acres of land were bought in Clarksburg for $40,000 to build a sugar refinery.

The refinery’s $1.5 million construction began that same month and provided 400 jobs in the midst of The Great Depression. The factory was composed of 15 buildings and Clarksburg resident Lester J. Holmes was named the district manager.

In November 1934 it was reported that 500 applications were submitted for the sugar control program, putting Yolo County at the top of the nation’s sugar production list. The increase in applications was attributed to the building of the sugar refinery.

About 8,000 acres of the sugar beet farms were in contract with Amalgamated Sugar Company, and the company reported that the majority of the beets were coming from Yolo County.

Construction continued through the winter and into the following year. In June 1935, it was reported that the sugar factory would be in full operation and be able to process 1,600 tons of beats daily by July 15.

Amalgamated Sugar Company reported that the refinery would be able to produce 5,000 bags of white satin sugar a day, and had a storage capacity of 350,000 bags of sugar.

Since most of the machinery was brought in from a dismantled refinery in Utah that was shut down due to the poor quality of the beet crops, production was able to start as soon as the equipment was moved into the newly built refinery.

Clarksburg residents opposed the plant because of the possible odor and pollution, according to Clarksburg Delta Community by Shipley Walters. When it was determined that the mill would bring 50 jobs year-round and 250 during harvest season, there was less opposition.

Much of the byproduct from making the sugar was sold as cow food because it contained fiber and nutrients that would benefit the cows.

Amalgamated Sugar started production later than anticipated because there needed to be a way to properly dispose of the wastewater that would be produced (about 5,000 gallons of wastewater were produced per minute). With the help of the Yolo County Commissioner, management at the sugar refinery decided that large tanks would be used to let the waste settle to the bottom before the water was dumped back into the river.

Operations began July 29 with the first shipment of beats and production began July 31. On August 10, stores began selling the sugar, and it was estimated that $2.5 million of sugar would be produced per year.

Beet growers were paid $200,000 in September, and Holmes stated that the mill had been running to capacity for the past few days.

In February 1936, American Crystal Sugar Company was in the process of purchasing two Amalgamated Sugar refineries, including the one in Clarksburg.

In 1936 the American Crystal Sugar Company bought and expanded the plant, which allowed the company to begin processing 2,200 tons of beats a day in October.

The new equipment cost $150,000, and three receiving stations were added to the operation. Company officials stated 50,000 more tons of beets would be refined compared to 1936.

In 1982, Delta Sugar Corporation from Egypt purchased American Crystal Sugar Company.

In 1993, Delta Sugar Corporation shut its doors after declaring bankruptcy, leaving 400 people without jobs, according to a Journal of Commerce report. The lack of production was due to a lack of product and soft prices.

The sugar mill was left vacant until the early 2000s when plans were to renovate the building into a wine tasting facility were approved.

The Old Sugar Mill had its grand opening on October 21, 2005 with complimentary wine and cheese tastings.
